Our Mission

The mission of the Poynter Library Systems office incorporates all computing related functions to support library staff. This includes hardware, software, client-server operations and infrastructure support for staff and public use. The Systems Office is involved in planning, implementation and support of all information technologies used by Library staff, students and patrons, and has developed systems that adhere to university standards but function independently of the campus network.

Six Windows 2000 servers provide the backbone of services to Dell Optiplex desktops located throughout the library in the lab, stacks, reference and staff areas. Library Internet Information services include the Poynter Library web site as well as an internal intranet site for internal library use. File and print services for both PC and Macintosh platforms allow flexible file sharing and shared printing within and between platforms.

A switched-to-the desktop ethernet solution supports all public access points and provides Gigabit and Fast Ethernet access to library catalogs and the virtual library while maintaining a high level of port-based security in public areas. Downtimes are kept to a minimum through the use of Norton Ghost Enterprise software and a temporary replacement computer. Combined with our file sharing methods, this strategy effectively reduces any desktop downtimes to less than two (2) hours.

Email services are also hosted within the library, and include a server-side virus scanning mechanism to detect viruses, filter to eliminate SPAM as well as remove corrupted email attachments before they hinder staff workflow. The library systems office engages in planning efforts for the campus, continually involved in committee work for the USF St. Petersburg and USF Libraries web sites.
