Bibliographic Instruction Room Use GuidelinesMissionUse of the Poynter Library Electronic Resources Center is intended to support USF's library instruction, research and service goals, promote user education and emphasize information literacy. DescriptionThe Bibliographic Lab is designed for both demonstration of and the practical hands-on learning with various library electronic information systems. Access is available to the USF Virtual Library, the Internet, and various software applications. The SOFTWARE INVENTORY below is a complete listing of all the software currently installed. Secured using a combination of mandatory profiles and system policies, two levels of student access to machines are available according to the needs of the instructor. Software installations cannot be initiated by instructors or users, and will be performed by in-house technicians only.Nineteen student machines and one instructor machine running Windows NT4 are fully networked and have unrestricted internet access. The NetOP software package allows the instructor to replicate his or her screen to all of the student screens, as well as monitor and project any students' screens at will. The lab is augmented with two dry erase boards and a PROXIMA 6850 ceiling mounted projection system which along with all student machines is set to a resolution of 600X800, although the instructor station and projection system are capable of 1280X1024 resolution with thousands of colors. Also available to the instructor is an ELMO Visual Presenter, a videocassette recorder, and a laser pointing unit. For more information view the HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS. Note:Software requests are to be made two weeks prior to the start of the semester, and must fall within the requirements of the HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS. Please use a computing software request form and submit it to the Systems Coordinator (553-3402). SchedulingReservation requests for the Bibliographic Lab will be scheduled by the Bibliographic Instruction Coordinator in accordance to the following order of priority:
Requests for use of the Bibliographic Lab will be handled in the order in which they are received and student instruction will take precedence over other group instruction.
NON-USF Sponsored group Use of facilitiesUSF sponsored groups are considered those that are both HOSTED and ATTENDED by parties employed or funded directly by the University of South Florida. A Non-USF Sponsored group is any party not employed or funded directly by the University of South Florida. In accordance with USF and SUS policies and procedures, such groups will be charged for lab use whether hosting a session or receiving instruction, according to their profit or non-profit status. Any Non-USF sponsored groups as described above, must contact the Systems Coordinator to verify any software or hardware requirements beyond those outlined in the Software Inventory and Hardware Specifications, and also contact Jackie Jackson (jackson@nelson.usf.edu) for availability and fee schedule.
Lab Use PolicyNo sessions will be conducted without the presence of a bibliographic instruction librarian, except by prior agreement. No sessions will be scheduled until at least thirty (30) minutes after the regular opening time of Poynter Library and must be terminated thirty (30) minutes before the library’s regular closing time. Any request for an exception to these time limits should be submitted to the Bibliographic Instruction Coordinator at the time of reservation of the classroom. No food or drink of any kind will be permitted in the Lab. Inappropriate user of the electronic faculties includes the downloading or copying of software or files when such action is not part of a classroom assignment or process; using library faculties to harass anyone or to transmit insulting or obscene electronic mail; using library faculties for commercial gain, or attempting to gain access to restricted resources. Such activities are governed by state and federal laws and may result in withdrawal of library privileges and / or further disciplinary action.
Hardware SpecificationsAll machines are equipped with 100tx fast ethernet adaptors and access to printing and internet services. Windows NT4.0 Service Pack 6a is the operating system used throughout the lab.1 (one) Instructor Station: Dell Optiplex GX110 machine, a pentium III processor with 128MB RAM.19 (nineteen) Student Stations: Dell Optiplex GM+133 machines with a Pentium 133 processor and RAM slots fully populated at 64MB. The system has 3 ISA and 2 shared ISA/PCI expansion slots, and a 1MB Trio64 PCI video card supporting 32,000 colors at 800X600 screen resolution on a 15" monitor. 1 (one) Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5P networked printer, providing printouts at a maximum of 600dpi.
