Top Ten Reasons to Come to
Poynter Library
- Fantastic librarians: Seven knowledgeable and experienced librarians take turns at the reference desk to answer—or help you to answer—questions. You’ll be amazed what information is available in our library.
- DVDs, Videos, CDs, and Audio Books: Librarian Jerry Notaro (873-4408) has compiled one of the best-regarded media collections around. Media check-outs for one week are free for SAPL members.
- Recreational Reading: The “Rec Reading” collection on the 1 st floor has excellent new fiction and topical non-fiction. Collection Development Patricia Pettijohn (873-4407) can tell you what’s new.
- Special collections: Librarian Jim Schnur (873-4626) supervises an outstanding special collections area, ranging from a 1553 book on fish to oral histories and archives related to important current local issues.
- Google Plus: Most everyone knows how to do a Google search, but Google Scholar, available in the library, connects search results with scholarly articles or book excerpts.
- Amazing research sources: Licensed databases available within the library include business sources like Valueline, Morningstar, and Business Source Premier; arts resources such as Smithsonian Global Sound and Dance in Video; and current affairs sources such as World News Collection and CQ Researcher, source of unbiased examinations of significant national issues.
- Life-long learning: Many SAPL members (those over 60) qualify to audit USFSP courses for free. Librarians can guide you to information that will help you identify the right course at the right time.
- Exhibits and programming: There is always something new in library display cases and other exhibit space. The library sponsors occasional programs as well, including movie night, author celebrations, and science cafes.
- Find out how to find out: Librarians will be happy to work with you one-on-one to guide you to the best databases and the best search terms to find information in a research subject that interests you.
