CINAHL 1982-to date

The Cumu lative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature indexes articles from more than 1600 nursing and allied health journals.   Full-text is included for articles in 56 journals.

Health and Safety Sciences Abstracts 1981-to date

Provides citations and abstracts to literature relating to occupational health and safety.   Includes indexing to journal articles, government reports, conference proceedings, and books.

Medline FirstSearch version:1965-to date

Produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, this database is considered the primary index to medical literature. The Cambridge Scientific version of Medline has the added advantage of links to many full-text electronic journal articles.

PsycINFO 1872-to date

This database is the main index to international literature related to psychology.   Produced by the American Psychological Association, the database provides citations and abstracts to journal articles, as well as dissertations, reports, books, and book chapters.   The Cambridge Scientific version of PsycINFO has the added advantage of links to many full-text electronic journal articles and includes links to cited references.

Risk Abstracts 1990-to date

Provides selective or comprehensive coverage for articles in more than 750 journals.   Updated quarterly, this database includes articles relating to natural hazards as well as biological, technological, and environmental risks.

Safety Science and Risk Abstracts 1981-to date

Provides selective or comprehensive coverage for articles in more than 1600 journals.    This database indexes articles relating to risk assessment, occupational hazards, and disaster preparedness.

Books covering public health are located in the RA call number area on the third floor of the library.   Additional materials on more specific topics are available in more defined call number sections, such as environmental health (RA565-RA600) or epidemiology (RA648.5-RA653.5). Selected Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Dictionary of Public Health Promotion and Education REF RA440.5.M634 1996      

Brief definitions of terminology relevant to the field of public health.   Many entries also contain examples of how the terms are used in a public health context.   Appendices provide a listing of health and professional organizations as well as a lengthy bibliography.

 
Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety REF RC963.A3 E53 1998

Published by the International Labour Office and written by an international group of experts, this scholarly work is in its fourth edition.   Organized by broad topic rather than alphabetically, the encyclopedia articles discuss a wide variety of topics relating to occupational hazards and disease as well as the legal, social, and ethical policies relating to these issues.   Tables, charts and extensive bibliographies help to further define the topic.

 
Encyclopedia of Public Health REF RA423 .E53 2002

This four-volume encyclopedia includes moderate to lengthy articles written by authorities in the field of public health.   Volume four includes the text of many important public health documents as well as an annotated bibliography of classic public health works.

Health Care Terms REF RA423.S55 1996

This slightly dated dictionary contains brief definitions of words relevant to health care and health care reform.   A particularly useful feature is the definitions of many health-related acronyms.   An appendix includes a timeline of health care in the United States.

Health and Wellness Resource Center  

This database provides background information on a wide variety of health topics.   Full-text access to a medical dictionary, a medical encyclopedia, a directory of health organizations, and a drug and herb finder is included.   The resource also provides full-text articles from many health related journals.

 
Health in the Americas REF RA407.5.A44 H43 2002

Published by the Pan American Health Organization, this resource provides an analysis of the health situation and trends in each of 47 American countries during the years 1997 to 2000.   An in-depth, cross-regional analysis is also included.

Portrait of Health in the United States RA410.53.P67 2001

Extensive collection of statistics on health care and disease prevalence in the United States .   Coverage includes physical health, workplace health and mental health.   The final chapter provides a list of resources that may be accessed for additional health statistics.
