Databases & Indexes

A multi-disciplinary database covering a variety of subjects.   Links to full-text articles are provided for some citations.    Searches may be limited to refereed publications.

Indexes articles, book reviews, interviews, and original fiction relating to the humanities and including topics in ethics and philosophy.   Includes links to full-text when available.

Selected Journals

Following is a list of selected serial titles which are available at Poynter Library.   Many additional journals are available either in print or online.   Use the USF Libraries Online Catalog to locate specific holdings.   The USF Libraries web site provides access to an extensive list of electronic journals.   Use the e-journal locator to determine if the title you need is available in pdf format or if selected articles from a journal may be included within a particular database. More titles may be available through interlibrary loan.

Finding Books

The following resources are available at the Poynter Library.   Books on ethics may be located in several areas.   Generally, books on ethics are shelved under call number BJ.   Related materials may be classified under other call numbers: medical ethics (R724-R725), business ethics (HF5387), philosophy (B), etc.   The Library of Congress Subject Headings books, located in the reference area, provide numerous suggestions for additional, specific subjects relating to ethics.

Selected Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Part of the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management series, this volume deals with ethical theories and issues as they relate to the field of business.   Articles are relatively long and include references for additional research.

This resource attempts a multidisciplinary approach by examining the ethical, theological, and political issues that have interacted to form Western society.   The lengthy articles are scholarly and include a brief bibliography.

A wonderful resource for an introduction to ethical issues in a wide variety of disciplines.   Ethical applications in business, politics, education, health and science are all included in this multi-volume set.   Each article includes a short glossary and a bibliography.

Although becoming somewhat dated, this highly-regarded encyclopedia continues to provide a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics relating to biological and medical ethics.   Articles are lengthy, well-balanced, and include bibliographies.    An extensive appendix in volume 5 provides the full-text of landmark ethical codes and directives.

This resource is particularly helpful for identifying government policy impact on a variety of biotechnical topics.   More than one hundred, peer-reviewed, lengthy articles are included. An index in volume two helps to locate more specific subjects.

The revised and expanded edition of this popular title contains more than 580 peer-reviewed articles.   Concentration here is on ethical theory rather than on applied ethics.

Brief articles on many ethical philosophies and applications.   Emphasis is mostly on understanding of theory.

This highly regarded, vast reference work, includes nearly 1500 articles.   Topics cover both Eastern and Western philosophy.   The original work was published in 1967 with a single-volume supplement issued in 1996 to provide updated information.

Provides key information on people and circumstances surrounding ethical controversies in U.S. politics.   Most entries are quite short but many include a brief bibliography.   A timeline of key events is provided at the front of the volume.

This exhaustive resource contains more than 2000 articles on topics relating to philosophy.    Articles are signed by the author and provide annotated references for additional reading.

Additional Reference Materials

Provides theoretical and practical information relating to business ethics.   Supplementary material includes a discussion of codes of ethical conduct, a glossary, a listing of relevant court cases, and a bibliography of additional resources.

An excellent, resource for locating pro and con issues on controversial topics.   Issued weekly and cumulated into an annual volume.   The topics are selected based on current issues in the news, making the index at the back of each volume critical for locating specific topics.  

This useful resource provides easy access to the professional ethics statements of major professional organizations in the fields of business, law, and health.   In addition to the actual text of the code, each entry includes contact information on the organization, additional resources that might be helpful, and background information on the history and development of the code.

A collection of recent books on "hot topics."    Many controversial topics are covered with each volume offering pro and con arguments and bibliographies for additional research.

Provides theoretical and practical information relating to international ethics.   Supplementary material includes a chronology of key events, a glossary, an annotated bibliography, and a directory of organizations that are active in the area of international ethics.

A handy resource for locating the text of important ethical codes, opinions, and statements from the American Medical Association and from an additional 25 medical specialty societies.  

Provides the full-text of the ethical codes of major societies and associations throughout the United States .   A wide variety of disciplines are included.

This hot topics book contains thirty-six articles discussing mass media ethics.   Articles are in pro/con format.
