Indexes ecology related articles in 282 journals.   Updated monthly.   Includes links to full-text articles when available through USF subscriptions.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management 1981 to date

This multi-disciplinary database provides citations to books and articles in all areas of environmental science and is updated monthly. Includes links to full-text articles when available through USF subscriptions.

GEOBASE 1980 to date

Indexes journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and reports written on topics relating to geology, geography, and ecology.   Updated monthly.

Expanded Academic ASAP 1982 to date

This multi-disciplinary database provides indexing to numerous scholarly and popular magazines.   Full-text links are available for some titles.

 
JSTOR: General Science and Ecology collections

JSTOR is a project that is seeking to provide full-text online access to archives of scholarly journals.   As this is an archival database, the most recent several years of each title are not provided, however, coverage goes back to volume one.

ISI Web of Science 1945 to date

Includes Science Citation Index Expanded , a key resource for scientific research.   One of the most comprehensive scientific databases with indexing to more than 5700 journals.    Links to full-text articles when available through USF subscriptions.   Updated weekly.

 
Wilson Omnifile Full Text 1994 to date

A multi-disciplinary database, this resource provides indexing and full-text access to articles in science, humanities, education, and business.   Updated weekly

Finding Books

Books covering the environmental sciences are located in the GE call number area on the second floor of the library.   Additional materials on related topics are available in other call number sections, including natural history (QH) or environmental technology (TD). Consult the Libraries of the USF System Online Catalog or the Library of Congress Subject Headings books for suggestions.

 

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Dictionary of Environmental Economics, Science, and Policy REF HC79.E5 G685 2001

Along with definitions for more than 3300 environmental terms, this volume has useful supplemental material including: three brief primers on environmental economics, international issues related to the environment, and environmental systems and modeling; basic facts and web addresses for selected environmental treaties and conventions; a bibliography; and a geological time scale.

Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Environmental Change REF GE10.E436 2001

Relatively brief definitions on a broad selection of topics related to the science of environmental change.   Many entries include a short list of references.

 
Encyclopedia of Biodiversity REF QH541.15.B56 E53 2001

This multi-volume encyclopedia provides lengthy articles on a variety of environmental issues.   Each article is signed by the author and contains a brief glossary, and a bibliography.  

 
Encyclopedia of Environmental Issues REF GE10.E52 2000

Relatively brief, signed articles on a variety of environmental issues.   Additional, suggested readings are included for many of the articles.   The encyclopedia contains nearly 200 photographs and has numerous charts, graphs and tables.

Encyclopedia of Environmental Studies REF TD9.A84 2001

To select the topics and terminology for this reference work, the authors surveyed the syllabi, the course readings, and the textbooks of ten highly regarded environmental science survey courses. This resource provides brief definitions and a lengthy bibliography.

Encyclopedia of Global Change: Environmental Change and Human Society REF GE149.E47 2002

This two-volume encyclopedia provides lengthy articles on a wide variety of environmental issues, particularly as they affect humans.   Charts, diagrams, photographs and current bibliographies enhance this reference source.

 
International Encyclopedia of Environmental Politics REF GE170.I55 2002

More than 160 international authors offer diversified perspectives on environmental politics.   Many of the entries provide a brief bibliography of additional readings.

Contemporary World Issues Index Table K

This series analyzes issues of concern to society.   In addition to providing a basic background on the topic, the volumes contain chronologies, biographical information, an annotated list of additional resources and a glossary.   Biodiversity, food safety and indoor pollution are just a few of the topics covered in this series.        

 
Environment Encyclopedia and Directory 2001 REF GE10.E56 2001

A very handy resource, this single-volume book provides maps illustrating environmental issues such as deforestation and ozone depletion.   The book also contains a list of abbreviations relating to environmental science, a directory of environmental organizations arranged by country, biographical information on environmental scientists, and a lengthy bibliography of environmental periodicals.

EnvirFacts Warehouse (EPA)  

Data on air, chemicals, facility information, grants and funding, hazardous waste, superfund, toxic releases, water permits, drinking water, drinking water contaminant occurrence, and drinking water microbial and disinfection byproduct information.

 
Environmental Technology Resources Handbook REF TD169.5.G68 2003

A guide to searching the web sites of government agencies, and other organizations, offering information on environmental technology.   Each entry includes the URL, the purpose of the organization, useful keywords for searching the site, and a brief summary of the site.

FactSearch 1984 to date

Brief facts and statistics on a wide variety of topics.

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic  

Includes full-text access to national and international, newspaper and magazine articles. Transcripts of television and radio broadcasts are also included.    Updated daily.

Opposing Viewpoints Index Table K

Another controversial issues series.   Each volume presents opposing views of an issue of concern.   A bibliography and issues for additional discussion are included in most volumes.   Recent issues covered include pollution and global resources.

 
World Atlas of Biodiversity REF G1046.D1 G76 2002

Maps, tables, and background information on various aspects of biodiversity.   Valuable supplemental material includes a phyla of living organisms, and listings of food crops of major significance, recent vertebrate extinctions, and biodiversity statistics listed by country.
