Biological Sciences
The Libraries of the USF System web site provides access to a wide variety of resources and services. If you are using a computer on campus, simply go to the following URL:
If you are using a computer from off-campus, the best way to access the library web site is to use your netID to go to Blackboard. From there, click on the “Libraries of the USF System” tab, and then click on “Libraries of the USF System” in the upper left corner of the page. A new window should pop up. If you perform your searches within the new window, you should be able to access any of the library resources. (Note: If you go directly to the library web site without first going to Blackboard, many of the resources will not allow access.)
The link from Blackboard may not work with all Internet providers. If you are unable to access library databases from Blackboard, go to the following web site:
http://www.acomp.usf.edu/help/usf_libraries/ and follow the instructions for accessing via the EZProxy method.
Locating Journal Article Citations
The Libraries of the USF System subscribe to a vast number of resources that provide journal citations and/or full-text articles. Most databases are subject-specific. To locate relevant resources, go to the main library web site (http://www.lib.usf.edu), and under the “Electronic Resources” category, select “databases/newspapers.” From there, choose the “by subject category” link and select “biology” from the pull-down menu. To get you started, the following databases may be useful for finding articles and information relating to the biological sciences:
BIOSIS Previews
The electronic equivalent of Biological Abstracts, the key resource for locating journal articles in the biological sciences. Indexing is included for more than 6,000 journal titles with coverage dating back to 1969.
Entomology Abstracts
Monitors 629 journal titles for articles relevant to the field of entomology. Updated monthly with coverage back to 1982.
FORMIS
Also called the Master Bibliography of Ant Literature, this database provides indexing to a large part of the scientific literature relating to the study of ants.
General Science Fulltext
Indexes approximately 280 journals with items of general interest to science students. Includes Discover, Impact of Science on Society, Issues in Science & Technology, New Scientist, New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Science Digest, Science News, etc.
JSTOR
This unique resource was created to provide searchable, full-text access to the older editions of a vast number of scholarly journals. Coverage goes back to volume one of the journal but does not include the most recent few years of the title. Biology and ecology are two areas of concentration within this resource.
ScienceDirect
A searchable collection of more than 1,000 Elsevier science journals. Also provides access to articles that are in press but not yet published in the print version.
Scirus
This science-specific web engine allows searching of scientific literature. A unique feature of this resource is the ability to limit a search to scientist’s web sites.
Web of Science
Includes Science Citation Index, one of the most comprehensive databases for locating scientific literature. Links to full-text articles when available through USF subscriptions. Updated weekly.
Locating the full-text journal article
Once you have located journal citations of interest, there are several ways to locate the full-text of a particular article:
- Use the
link if it is available. - Perform a title search on the title of the journal (not the article title) in the USF online catalog.
- Use the e-journal finder located in the “Electronic Resources” section of the Libraries of the USF System web site.
- Click on the “full-text” link (when available) within the database.
- If you do not locate the materials at USF, consider submitting an interlibrary loan request for the item.

Interlibrary Loan
If books or articles of interest are available at another USF Library or at libraries throughout the United States, they may be requested through the interlibrary loan (ILLiad) system. Remember to plan ahead if you want materials from outside the USF St. Petersburg Library since it can take some time to get items sent from other libraries. Interlibrary loan items are requested through the “Interlibrary loan” link located in the “Services” section of the Libraries of the USF System web site.
Remember, if you have difficulty using one of the library resources, talk to a reference librarian. Help is available in-person, by phone (727-553-4124) or via chat (from the Ask a Librarian link on the Libraries of the USF System web site)!
