Poynter Library has an extensive section on religious studies found on the second floor. The classifications are subdivided by the major religions of the world:
BL = Mythology and Ancient Religions
BM = Judaism
BP = Islam
BQ = Buddhism
BR-BX = Christianity
Additionally, some subjects have a religious component and can be searched using the phrase “religious aspects” (e.g., African Americans—Religious Aspects; Women’s Studies—Religious Aspects).

Divided into five major sections: methodology, Old and New Testaments, individual ethical issues, and historical works. Covers book and journal articles published in five languages. A name index is at the back.
Dictionaries and Encyclopedias
Anchor Bible Dictionary. 6 v. REF BS440 .A54 1992.
Alphabetically arranged; signed entries, many lengthy, with bibliographies. Includes proper names, major words, and cultural and social history, as well as books of the Bible, the Apocrypha, and the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Encyclopaedia Judaica. 16 v. REF DS102.8 .E496.
Signed articles with bibliographies. Heavily illustrated. Includes biographies and social and political history of world Jewry. Volume 1 contains an index, a hundred-year Jewish calendar, place names, and an archaeological record based on pottery finds.
The Decennial Book 1983-92 follows Volume 16 and incorporates new material as well as updating entries in the original set.
Encyclopedia of American Religions. 5 th ed. REF BL2525 .M449 1996.
An “authoritative source for information on prominent and obscure North American religious groups.” Introductory essays are followed by essays on the twenty major religious families. A directory lists descriptive information on the various groups that comprise the twenty families. Three indexes—geographic, subject, and master—are at the back.
Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World. Libraries of the USF System
An online encyclopedia covering the religion’s history and development for its origins through modern times. Includes biographies of key figures, maps, and illustrations as well as thematic articles.
Encyclopedia of Religion. 16 v. REF BL31 .E46 1987.
Considered the standard work on the subject, despite its age. Lengthy articles, signed with bibliographies. Aims to “introduce educated, nonspecialist readers to important ideas, practices, and persons in the religious experience of humankind from the Paleolithic past to our day.” The final volume gives a synoptic outline of contents and an index.
Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of World Religions. REF BL31 .M47 1999.
Short entries, arranged alphabetically, give an overview of the important figures, movements, historical periods, and themes of the world’s religions. Heavily illustrated. A topically divided bibliography is at the back.
New Catholic Encyclopedia. 15 v. REF BX841 .N44 2003.
Emphasis on Catholic history and doctrine but in scope this title covers all of Christianity throughout the centuries. Signed articles; most with bibliographies. With the exception of the reigning Pope, biographies of living persons are excluded. Detailed index in volume 15. This edition is also available online through the GaleGroup series of databases.
World Christian Encyclopedia. 2 v. REF BR157 .W67 2001.
The first volume compiles country-by-country comparative surveys of churches and religions in the 20 th century. The second volume gives five types of subdivision data for each country. Series of indexes at the back of volume 2.
Concordances and Commentaries
NRSV Concordance Unabridged. REF BS425 .K645 1991.
An “index of all occurrences of all words in the New Revised Standard Version” of the Bible, including the Apocrypha and the deuterocanonical books. Only the English text is addressed; there is no cross-indexing to the original biblical languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek). Topical index at the back.
New Interpreter’s Bible. 12 v. REF BS491.2 .N484 1994.
Lengthy essays, each by an acknowledged scholar, discuss the entire Bible, each Testament, and each book. Both Protestant and Roman Catholic perspectives are represented. Includes the text under consideration, an analysis, and reflections.

Indexes relevant journals, chapters in edited books, and appropriate dissertations. Gives citations only.
Expanded Academic ASAP. 1980 to date. Libraries of the USF System
A broad general database that covers most academic disciplines. 90% of the citations include full-text links.
Humanities Abstracts. 1984 to date. Libraries of the USF System
Indexes periodicals in arts and humanities subject areas, including religion. Citation and abstract only.
Old Testament Abstracts. 1988-1996. Index Row C.
New Testament Abstracts. 1988-1996. Index Row C.
Citations and abstracts of articles in subject-relevant journals. There is some overlap in journal titles covered. Representative scholarship from Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish periodicals.
General Works
Longman Guide to Bible Quotations. REF BS185 1986 .H37.
Uses the King James version; includes the Apocrypha. A short explanation follows each quotation. Keyword index at the back.
New Layman’s Parallel Bible. REF BS125 .B5 1981.
Four English translations (King James, New International, Living Bible, and Revised Standard versions) of both Testaments are presented side-by-side.
Macmillan Bible Atlas. REF G2230 .A2 1993.
Harper Atlas of the Bible. G2230 .H47 1987.
Both trace changes and historical events in biblical lands through maps and commentary from the Lower Paleolithic to 150 CE. The Harper atlas also covers social life and customs and is heavily illustrated throughout. Both have indexes at the back. The Harper title also has a detailed timeline at the front.

Provides a variety of linked and locally-authored resources for students in the academic study of religion.
Roget’s Thesaurus of the Bible. REF BS432 .D38 1992.
Locates Bible verses by subject, grouping together passages with similar meaning. Bible quotations are paraphrased from several modern translations. An index of Bible references and a subject index are at the back.
