Local Art Collections

This guide provides information on art venues throughout Florida.  The entries are organized by geographic region; however a detailed alphabetical index is located at the end of the book.   Each entry provides information on directions, admission, permanent collections, and other nearby attractions.  

The catalogue highlights the museum's permanent collections in European art, American art, Ancient and Asian art, African art, art of the Americas , and photography.   Each photograph is accompanied by a textual description of the artist, subject, style, and technique.  

A complete catalogue of the Dali Museum collection, with images of the art works and accompanying narration of each specific art work and Dali's development as an artist.  

Directories

Divided into four sections: organizations (organizations, museums, libraries), schools, information (state arts councils, magazines, newspapers, scholarships, booking agencies, etc.), and indexes (name, subject, organization).   Covers the United States and Canada .   Lists are geographic.

A one-volume directory of museums and galleries of art in the United States.   This source is arranged by state.   Includes some illustrations and maps, as well as an index.

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

This two-volume guide presents artwork from the Paleolithic, Mid-Paleolithic, and Neolithic periods. The art of pre-Columbian hunter-gatherer groups, early cave dwellers, and other early North and South Americans are included.   Some color illustrations are included.   This guide has an index.

An alphabetically arranged source of common art and art history terminology.   Also provides biographical information about notable artists.   Includes a bibliography and an index.

Available online on the GroveArt Database.  Covers fine arts, decorative arts, performance art, and other multimedia expressions.   Includes biographies, movements and groups, and general subject areas.   Alphabetically arranged, entries are signed and carry short bibliographies.   Many illustrations.   Reflects worldwide artistic endeavor from prehistory through the mid-1990s.   The entire final volume is a detailed index.   The online version is updated quarterly and gives hyperlinks to illustrations and museums.

Covers 18 th and 19 th century American art.   This one-volume source contains illustrations, some are in color.   This reference also contains an index.    

The Oxford Companion to Western Art focuses primarily on painting, sculpture, and the graphic arts.   The entries are alphabetically arranged and each entry is signed.   It also includes a list of color plates and an index of Artists and Writers on Art.  

Biographies

Brief information on more then 900 artists, most still living.   Indicates with whom artist studied, awards, exhibitions, and collections containing individual works.   A short bibliography follows, if applicable.   A museum and gallery list, plus name index, are at the front of the book.

Illustrated introduction to Western Art and the artists from the Middle Ages to the present day.   The encyclopedia consists of 200 painter, sculptor, and printmaker biographies.   Each biography includes a brief info to life and work, listing and image of key works, and a description of the artists' style.  

Contains bibliographical entries for renown 20 th -century artists such as,   Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Salvador Dali, and many others.   Black and white illustrations of modern art, as well as some color illustrations, are included.   This work contains an index.

Covers with whom artists studied, awards, exhibitions, collections containing individual works, occasional comments giving additional information, and a list of sources.   Some artist's signatures are reproduced with entry.   A list of art institutions, including museums, galleries, and associations is at the front of the first volume.   A key to citations of bibliographical sources is at the back of the third volume.

Annual publication.  Includes artists and others working in the art field (museum personnel, librarians, educators, critics, dealers, etc.).   Covers living persons only in the U. S. , Canada , and Mexico .   Geographic and professional classifications index plus a cumulative necrology (1953-1998) are at the back.
