USF AFRICANA STUDIES DEPARTMENT

THE AFRICAN AMERICAN MOSAIC
The African-American Mosaic is a resource guide for the study of black history and culture. The publication, which is excerted online is the first Library of Congress guide to the institution's African- American collections.

AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES
The Daniel A.P. Murray Pamphlet Collection presents a panoramic and eclectic review of African American history and culture, spanning almost 100 years from the early 19th century through the early 20th century, with the bulk of the material published between 1875 and 1900. Among the authors represented are Fredrick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Benjamin W. Arnett, Alexander Crummel, and Emanuel Love.

AFRICAN BURIAL GROUND ARCHEOLOGICAL PROJECT
This site provides information about the recent rediscovery and excavation of an 18th century African American Burial Ground in lower Manhattan.

THE SCHOMBURG CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN BLACK CULTURE
An online exhibit developed from materials in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located in Harlem, N.Y.

SENECA VILLAGE WEB SITE
This exhibition by The New-York Historical Society details Seneca Village, the first significant community of African American property owners in Manhattan. The village's identity was erased with the creation of Central Park.

SITTING FOR JUSTICE
A Smithsonian exhibit detailing the sit-in at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. This sparked a six-month long protest and led to the desegregation of the F.W. Woolworth lunch counter on July 25, 1960. The site includes sound recordings of songs from the Civil Rights Movement.

THE TUSKEEGEE AIRMEN
The Afro American's exhibit tells the story of the heroic men who wanted to fight to keep their country free. While there, don't miss out on the newspaper's other interactive exhibits, which are part of the online Black History Museum.

AFRICAN IMMIGRANT FOLKLIFE PROJECT
This Smithsonian Institute project documents how African immigrants adapt their culture to the North American context. This site examines a Nigerian Yoruba "naming ceremony" in the Washington, D.C. area.

Celebrations

IT'S KWANZAA TIME Through the writings of Kwanzaa founder Dr. Maulana Karenga and others, this site explores the origins and meanings of the African American celebration and as well as the debates that have surfaced in recent years.

JUNETEENTH.COM
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. In modern times it is marked around the world as a celebration of freedom.

National Organizations

NAACP ONLINE
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the oldest and largest civil rights organization in this country. Offered here is information on their latest initiatives as well as positions on a range of topical issues.

THE NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE
The National Urban League was founded in 1910 to help African Americans achieve social and economic equality. This non-profit organization offers an extensive archive of speeches and columns by League leaders and a searchable Job Bank, listing hundreds of jobs throughout the country.
